Unaccompanied minors (UMs)
Reservations can be made by calling WestJet at 1-800-538-5696 or booking online. Please note that AIR MILESĀ® reward miles are only available for bookings made online. When booking online it is extremely important to call WestJet to add the mandatory information outlined below to the reservation, to pay the fee, and to confirm we have all necessary information. If we do not have the required information, we cannot allow the child to fly.
Age restrictions: Children of at least five and not yet turned twelve years of age are designated as an unaccompanied minor (UM) when travelling alone.
Fee: WestJet provides the additional unaccompanied minor services for a fee of $50 per child each way plus tax for travel to any WestJet destination.
Flight restrictions: UMs are only permitted on direct or non-stop flights (non-connecting flights).
Mandatory information required at the time of booking: name, telephone number and address of the people booking the flight, bringing the child to the airport and meeting the child at the destination city.
WestJet serves complimentary soft drinks and juices and a selection of small snacks, but if your child has special dietary needs or is traveling on a very long flight, you may wish to pack a special snack for them to enjoy. They may also purchase food items on board. For more information please see Inflight Experience.
Check-in 90 minutes to two hours prior to the scheduled departure time to allow enough time for all forms to be filled out. The parent/guardian who brings an unaccompanied child to the airport will be required to remain in the airport up to 15 minutes after flight departure before leaving the airport. Upon arrival, the child will be brought to the WestJet arrivals area to meet the pick-up party. For unaccompanied minors arriving in Las Vegas only, please report to the customer service agent to request a gate pass, as unaccompanied minors must be met at the arrival gate beyond the secured area.
Identification: All parties require identification at the airport.
The child must have sufficient identification (birth certificate, health care card for domestic flights, for example). If travelling to another country, the child must meet entrance requirements at Customs, which may include a valid passport, proof of citizenship and photo identification. A notarized letter of permission to travel signed by both parents is strongly recommended.
The parent/guardian must present valid photo identification at the check in counter.
The adult picking up the child on arrival must also present valid photo identification.
Release forms: will be provided upon check in and must be completed prior to boarding
Helpful hints for Unaccompanied Minors
WestJet wants our younger guests to have a great WestJet experience too! Here are some tips to help ensure your child's trip is safe, fun and memorable.
You may want to provide entertainment (for example a book or handheld game) or a special meal or snack for your child to enjoy during travel. Please visit Inflight Experience for information on Live Satellite TV, pay-per-vu movies and Buy on Board meal service.
At the check in gate, your child will be asked to board the flight before other passengers, and upon arrival, will be the last one off the plane so our inflight team can assist them to the arrivals area.
Remind your child to make sure they have all their personal items before leaving the plane.
