Unaccompanied minors are defined as passengers between the ages of two and 12, traveling alone or accompanied by an airline escort.
General Information
1) Service classification
The general policy with respect to accepting passengers classified as Children (between the ages of two and 12 - minus one day-) stipulate that:
All children between the ages of two and 12 (minus one day) are considered minors. The applicable age is the child's age on the day of departure.
Children up to the age of five (minus one day) must travel in the company (i.e. in the same cabin) of a legally responsible adult (over 18 years old).
Children between the ages of five and 12 (minus one day) must travel in the company of another passenger between 12 and 17 in a 1 to 1 ratio (that is one passenger from 12 to 17 years old per child).
Passengers of over 18 years old do not face restrictions regarding the number of minors in their charge.
This applies to all LAN domestic and international routes.
If none of the above standards are met, the child may travel by means of the Unaccompanied Minor service, provided if the following requirements are fulfilled:
All children between the ages of two and 12 (minus one day) traveling without a responsible adult companion are considered (UM). Children under the age of five will not be permitted to fly as Unaccompanied Minors.
Children between the age of five and 15 (minus one day) can fly as Unaccompanied Minors.
For children up to the age of 12 (minus one day), the Unaccompanied Minor service is mandatory.
For those between the ages of 12 and 15 (minus one day), the Unaccompanied Minor service is optional.
Under no circumstances will minors 15 and older be accepted as Unaccompanied Minors.
2) Cost of service
The service is charged on each segment of the itinerary:
3) Where is the service available?
Unaccompanied Minors cannot travel in First Class. Also, children will not be accepted on flights with connections involving overnight layovers.
All children traveling as Unaccompanied Minors must fill out the Minor Transport Form, which will be provided at the sales office. These children should be checked in at the airport in the company of a responsible adult.
Unaccompanied Minors will only be accepted on itineraries operated by LAN. Inter-airline connections taking place outside the holding area are not available to Unaccompanied Minors. Connections involving different airports are not permitted, only "online" connections within the same day and airport.
Unaccompanied Minors are not permitted on LAN marketing flights, nor are they allowed on marketing flights operated by LAN for other companies.
A maximum of eight Unaccompanied Minors traveling without escorts are permitted per flight (i.e. on one plane simultaneously) on planes with two aisles and a maximum of six Unaccompanied Minors traveling without escorts are permitted per flight (i.e. on one plane simultaneously) on planes with one aisle .
The minor's reservation number should include contact names and telephone numbers at the trip's points of departure, destination and transit.
The Unaccompanied Minors service can only be confirmed through the Sales Department Service.
Those Unaccompanied Minors not confirmed by the department will only be allowed to board under the condition that the number of Unaccompanied Minors does not exceed the maximum permitted by the airline (taking into account the flight's complete trajectory). If this limit is exceeded, then the Unaccompanied Minors must be made to board an alternative flight where these security norms can be met (no penalty fees for change of flight or travel date will apply).
4) How does the service work?
The UM must be accompanied by an adult who can perform check-in duties for them. This individual must remain on the airport premises for the 20 minutes preceeding and following the flight's departure.
The Unaccompanied Minor Form must always be completed and provide all the child's personal information, as well as the personal information of both the individual responsible for dropping the child off at the airport and the person responsible for picking the child up at the point of destination.
Unaccompanied Minor service will not be permitted in cases where the child in question requires assistance to get around due to a physical condition (i.e. uses a wheelchair, etc.).
The admittance of Unaccompanied Minors with slight mental disabilities is permitted under the conditions delineated in Chapter 3.20 of the MOA.
The airline doctor must evaluate all requests for Unaccompanied Minor service for children with other types of disabilities.
In cases where special medical authorization is required, Unaccompanied Minor service will not be permitted.
Minors traveling with discount?
Unaccompanied Minors with tickets depending on available space will only be admitted on flights without intermediate stops and without connections.
If the Unaccompanied Minors are traveling with confirmed-space tickets, they will be exempt from the preceding restrictions. However, they must have a confirmed reservation.
In the case of Unaccompanied Minors with "disembarkable" confirmed-space tickets, boarding can be refused at the point of origin, but they may not be made to disembark at an intermediate stop.
